Deck the Halls:  Choosing a Theme

Do you ever wonder “What will my Christmas theme be this year?”.  I love the challenge of transforming my home into something new every year.

I’m going to share with you how I choose my themes.  I consider 5 factors when choosing a theme:

  1. Will I be challenged?
  2. How will I organize and store the items?
  3. Do I have any coordinating items?
  4. Do I have any emotional feelings or memories attached to this theme?
  5. Will this theme be used throughout the entire house or somewhere specific?

Will I be challenged?

I like to choose themes that make me think outside the box.  I don’t want my décor to just be pretty, I want it to be unique.  Even though I may choose a theme similar to someone else, we don’t have the same taste so we probably won’t choose the same items.  We won’t necessarily shop at the same stores, and if by chance we do we may not even purchase the same items.  In the event that we do purchase the same items odds are pretty slim that we will use them in the same way.  I like to decorate for the WOW factor!  It’s okay to go over the top, Christmas only comes once a year.

How will I organize and store the items?

When I store my décor I store everything by theme or color.  When I am looking for a specific item I know exactly where to locate it.  I label my storage containers with specific details so that I will be able to locate the items that I am looking for.

I use different sized storage totes and bins to store my items.  I store the majority of my items in plastic storage containers and other items are stored in storage totes.

Do I have any coordinating items?

When I decorate I coordinate everything!  If I think of a new theme I think about other items that I may have that will coordinate with this particular theme.  Once I figure out what I have to coordinate with the item(s) in question I will either make the decision to purchase or not purchase.  I often find items that I would like to purchase for a new collection.  When this occurs I wait until the sales after Christmas to purchase these items.

Do I have any emotional feelings or memories attached to this theme?

When I’m thinking of themes, I consider any attachments I may have for a particular theme.  I know this seems silly, but if something made me feel particularly happy at some point I like to reminisce and think about the good times.  One theme that makes me extremely happy is my Disney theme.  Disney is my happy place.  Disney World, Disney Land, it doesn’t matter, I’ve been a lifelong fan!

Will this theme be used throughout the entire house or somewhere specific?

As I am planning my themes I always consider the areas that I am decorating.  It is important to consider this because if I am decorating with a specific theme throughout my entire home I need to make sure I have everything I need for it.  If I do not have enough for one theme throughout the house, I can either opt to do something different in each room, not make the rooms as grand and use less in each room, or only decorate specific areas.

You can see my video here. I hope that I have given you some ideas or maybe just reminded you of something that will help you when choosing your theme.
